Green Thumb

After much talking, planning and prep work, we now have a garden.

Getting a vegetable garden has been a long term goal for quite a while. Living in apartments, we almost always kept a herb garden going, and experimented a bit with some container gardening, but with mixed results. We'd always talked about starting a "real" garden once we got a house.

We moved in about a year ago, and figured that trying to pull off any major yardwork in the first year would be overextending ourselves. But when spring came around, we drew up some plans, and started in on Saturday.

Ripping up that much sod is a serious pain in the ass. Fortunately, I've got an awesome Fiskars shovel that lets me use my weight for digging, so the process went faster than I would have expected. Neighbor Jeff lent me a wheelbarrow and an awesomely old school Garden Maid Soil Blender by Detriot Tools... it's basically a tiny electric tiller that's not made any more. Beats doing it by hand! So, we planted a few breeds of tomatoes

Some peppers (red, yellow and jalapeno):

A whole slew of herbs:

and next week we'll plant some corn and sunflowers.

While we were at it, K planted some beautiful Regal Geraniums and some other flowers.

Here's hoping everything survived last night... it was supposed to dip to about 43, but when we woke up it was 34 degrees... I'd hate for everything to die on the first day.

Still, the hardest part is over. I'll still need some more Aleve today, I'm sore in places I wasn't aware of. But I'm looking forward to good tomato sauce come late summer!

I'll update pics as the plants get to be more veggie like.

What, no picture of the shovel? That's not so much kidney shaped as it is a bit phallic. Seems as good a place as any to put a bunch of ovaries.
(I've got to start proof-reading)
